Death remains the one gateway through which every human being must pass, the one experience nobody can avoid. In our thoughts we may treat it like an unwelcome guest, someone whom we do not want to know. And so, we need to discover how to look at death without falsifying it or deluding ourselves. We should be suspicious of easy answers to its mystery. If we avoid the thought of death it becomes meaningless to speak of resurrection and death itself becomes an absurdity. To fail to give thought to death would be to see it only as a brute fact, and we cannot live humanly with brute facts. Coming to understand all the fictional selves that enter and shape our thinking and feeling - and striving to live beyond them - is the homework we have to do in preparation for death. To cope fully, we need to open the mind and heart - through meditation to a deeper way of living. Donagh O'Shea is an Irish Dominican priest. A native of Co. Cork, he has lectured on spiri- tuality in Italy, Ireland, Britain, Switzerland, the U.S.A., Albania and the Philippines. His three previous books have won wide acclaim Go Down to the Potter's House, Take Nothing for the Journey, and In a Fitful Light.
