Der vorliegende Aufsatz weist nach, dass der Einfluss der Detektivgeschichte "Der entwendete Brief" viel wichtiger ist. In ihr entwickelt Poe eine Theorie des optimalen Verstecks.Dieser Theorie folgt die Untergangssymbolik in "Buddenbrooks". Dabei verwendet Thomas Mann Poes Erzählung nur, weil er die Geschichte in der Ausgabe des Scheible-Verlags, Stuttgart, 1859, kennenlernt. Darin ändert der unbekannte Übersetzer den Text auf eine Weise, die in "Buddenbrooks" wiederzuerkennen ist.
