But Asha also has a soft side that readers glimpse now and again. Brief moments during which her genuine love for both men, mostly notably the scene when Wendell bails her out of jail, occur throughout the book. She has a teenage daughter about whom she constantly worries. She cares for her elderly mother and often visits her in the retirement home where she stays. What little money she manages to scrounge from men all goes toward the welfare of those she loves, leaving next to nothing to satisfy her greed. Despite her desire for financial security, love is at the heart of her. Asha lives by the motto, "I don't care whose heart is broken as long as it ain't mine."
