Il regime comunista dei paesi della ex Unione Sovietica ha depredato le riserve auree delle proprie banche centrali favorendone l'esportazione in paesi compiacenti. La nomenclatura dei paesi comunisti durante il regime ha invece favorito l'esportazione illegale di parte delle loro riserve a fini esclusivamente privati. Il libro tratta del furto di otto tonnellate di lingotti d'oro effettuato nell'anno 1975 da parte di dirigenti della KDS - Komitet za dăržavna sigurnost (Comitato per la Sicurezza dello Stato) presso la Narodna Banka (Banca Nazionale) di Bulgaria a Sofia. La trama del romanzo si intreccia con un altro furto avvenuto in quel periodo in un altro Stato, la Jugoslavia, durante il regime del Maresciallo Tito presso la Banka Centrale a Beograd.I due furti erano giustificati per finanziare un gruppo partigiano Balkan freedom che li avrebbe dovuti utilizzare per istaurare la democrazia in quei territori.Ma sarà proprio così che doveva andare? Oppure dietro c'era qualche altro interesse?
