Während der Einfluss englischer Autoren ausführlich untersucht wurde, ist bislang kaum bekannt, dass auch französische Romane während des gesamten Zeitraums lebhaft und konstant rezensiert und übersetzt wurden. Dieser literarische Transfer wird hier am Beispiel freizügiger Romane vorgeführt, welche die Gattung in Frankreich zwischen 1730 und 1800 dominieren und in Deutschland bald als Paradigma der französischen Literatur überhaupt gelten. Bedeutende libertine Romanciers wie Crébillon fils, Marivaux und Laclos, aber auch populäre Schriftsteller wie Rétif de la Bretonne werden kontrovers als literarische Vorbilder oder abschreckende Exempel unmoralischer Literatur beurteilt. Untersucht wird die Entwicklung der literarischen Kritik, unterschiedliche Typen und Phasen der Übersetzung und der Einfluss französischer Werke auf deutsche Schriftsteller. Zusätzlich dokumentiert eine kommentierte Übersetzungsbibliographie mit Standortnachweisen die Breite der Rezeption.
