Jemanden zwingen scheint gesellschaftlich stets zu bedeuten, dass jemand etwas gegen seinen eigenen Willen ausführt, z.B. weil eine Person mehr oder minder von der Zwang ausübenden Person abhängig ist, und dass aus dieser Zwangssituation nichts Positives entstehen kann. Das heißt, durch Zwang wird die Freiheit einer Person selbstbestimmt entscheiden zu können, z.B. etwas Bestimmtes tun oder nicht tun zu wollen, eingeschränkt.Kant formulierte in seiner Schrift zur Vorlesung über Pädagogik die häufig zitierte Frage, wie die Freiheit bei dem Zwange zu kultivieren sei, die angesichts der aufgezeigten pädagogischen Haltung, nach der keine Erziehung ohne Zwang möglich ist, auch heute noch aktuell ist.
