The story is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, and revolves around two young boys, an orphan and a foundling, who become friends while living in the King's Printing House. The boys are raised by the printer and his wife, who treat them kindly and provide them with a good education.However, as the boys grow older, they become involved in a web of deceit and betrayal. William must decide whether to turn his father in or help him escape.Meanwhile, the foundling, whose name is James, has fallen in with a group of criminals and is living a life of crime. He eventually realizes the error of his ways and decides to turn his life around.
