Constantius und Aetius, präfigurierte aber gleichzeitig bereits die ihm in Italien nachfolgenden germanischen Herrscher Odoaker und Theoderich. Die Arbeit verbindet eine biografisch-ereignisgeschichtliche Untersuchung von Ricimers Karriere mit einer Untersuchung der strukturellen Rahmenbedingungen seiner Machtposition und Reichspolitik in der zweiten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts.
