Description
Largely ignored in her lifetime, Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) was later recognized as one of the best Spanish writers of all times. A master of late Romanticism, she is also a precursor, with Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, of Modernism in both Latin American and Spain, influencing writers such as Rubén Darío, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Antonio Machado, and Miguel de Unamuno.
Flavio (1861) has all the elements of a romantic novel: a handsome, passionate yet-distant hero, a tormented female protagonist, as many twists and turns as a modern-day telenovela and a shocking end. Masterfully told from an original feminist perspective, the story takes place in the ravishing loneliness of the countryside and in lively night festivities, where civilization preys upon humanity's purest illusions.
