Der Siegeszug der Osmanen bis vor die Tore Wiens schlug sich in einem weitverzweigten, bis heute kaum überschaubaren Schrifttum nieder, das alle materiellen Mittel der Kommunikation umfaßt und als transnationales Paradigma frühneuzeitlicher Öffentlichkeit angesehen werden muß. Die in diesem Band vereinigten Studien, Ergebnisse eines Kolloquiums, das der Wolfenbütteler Arbeitskreis für Renaissanceforschung zusammen mit der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften veranstaltete, wenden sich im interdisziplinären Ausgriff und in internationaler Perspektive sowohl den Akteuren der osmanisch-europäischen Konfrontation wie auch den Autoren, Schreibweisen, Problemlagen, Traditionslinien und Rezeptionsmodalitäten der einschlägigen Literatur zu.
