Euripidis Fabulae Quatuor is a collection of four plays by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides, originally published in 1857. The plays included in this collection are Hippolytus Coronifer, Alcestis, Iphigenia In Aulide, and Iphigenia In Tauris. Hippolytus Coronifer is a tragedy that tells the story of the young and handsome Hippolytus, who is devoted to the goddess Artemis and rejects the advances of his stepmother Phaedra. When Phaedra falsely accuses Hippolytus of rape, he is banished and ultimately dies, leading to the tragic downfall of his family.Alcestis is a drama about a woman who sacrifices herself to save her husband's life. Admetus, the king of Thessaly, is granted a boon by the god Apollo, who allows him to avoid death if someone else will die in his place. Admetus's wife Alcestis willingly takes on this burden, but is later rescued by the hero Heracles.Iphigenia In Aulide is a tragedy that centers around the Greek army's preparations for war against Troy. Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks, is told by the goddess Artemis that he must sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to ensure the success of the campaign. The play explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and the consequences of war.Finally, Iphigenia In Tauris is a sequel to Iphigenia In Aulide, in which Iphigenia is believed to have been sacrificed by her father. However, she has actually been transported to the land of the Taurians, where she serves as a priestess. When her brother Orestes arrives on a mission to steal a sacred statue, Iphigenia must choose between her loyalty to her family and her duty to the gods.
