Als einem braven Manne vermeldet wurde, daß etliche Menschen viel Böses von ihm sagten, antwortete er: Es ist besser, daß sie es sagen und lügen, als daß ich es thue. - Derselbe wünschte, daß ihn seine Verleumder so lang müßten auf dem Rücken tragen, als sie ihn auf der Zunge von Haus zu Haus herumgetragen; sie würden dann des Verleumdens bald müde werden. - Einer vermahnte denselben wackern Mann, daß er sich an seinen Verleumdern rächen sollte; dem antwortete er: Die Ehre sollen sie nicht haben, daß ich Ehre bei ihnen suchen sollte, die sie selbst nicht haben, und ich die meine nicht verloren. - Als ihm die Lästerung seines ärgsten Feindes zu Ohren gekommen, sagte er: Ich will Gott für ihn bitten, daß er fortan nichts als Gutes von mir und andern guten Leuten rede. - Und von den Nachreden und Verleumdungen, die ihm widerfahren, sagte er: Wenn der Mensch sonsten rein und unschuldig ist, so liegt nichts dran, wenn schon sein Mantel besudelt wird; man reibt es aus, oder wann es trocken wird, geht es selber wieder aus; so bleibt der Mann, der er ist, der Mantel, der er ist.
