Überholte Fehlurteile werden korrigiert, Gotthelf wird im ästhetischen und kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext der Zeit und im europäischen Vergleich gesehen, und es wird herausgearbeitet, daß sein Werk nicht nur Ausdruck volkserzieherischen und politischen Wirkens ist, sondern die literarische Leistung eines großen realistischen Erzählers. Der Band wird abgeschlossen durch eine Bibliographie und ein ausfüuuml;hrliches Personen-, Werk- und Sachregister.
