El 18 de marzo, en el antepenúltimo año de este siglo, el cartero que cumplía sus funciones en la calle Jacques-Cartier en Montreal entregó en el número veintinueve una carta dirigida al señor Summy Skim. La carta decía: "El señor Snubbin saluda al señor Summy Skim y le ruega pasar sin tardanza a su estudio por un asunto que le interesa". ¿Con qué propósito quería ver el notario al señor Summy Skim? Este lo conocía, como todo el mundo en Montreal. Era un hombre excelente, un consejero seguro y prudente. Canadiense de nacimiento, dirigía el mejor estudio de la ciudad, el mismo que sesenta años antes tenía por titular al famoso señor Nick, cuyo verdadero nombre era Nicolás Sagamore, huronés de origen, patrióticamente implicado en el terrible asunto Morgaz, cuya resonancia fue muy considerable hacia 1837. El señor Summy Skim se sorprendió mucho al recibir esta carta, pues no tenía ningún asunto en el estudio de Snubbin. Acudió sin embargo al llamado. Media hora después llegaba a la plaza del mercado Bonsecours y era introducido en el gabinete del señor Snubbin, que lo esperaba.
