Cirilo es un hombre retraído y soñador, de espíritu libre e independiente. Veranda es una joven de personalidad fuerte y posesiva. Inician un accidentado romance.Cirilo descubre un pozo misterioso que con palabras reflejadas en el agua le comunica que bebiendo de ella puede viajar al pasado, al lugar que quiera. Va a Londres en 1957, donde una vendedora de fruta le cuenta sobre la guerra. Viaja a Atenas en 1942 y asiste al estreno de la ópera Tosca con la debutante María Callas, que le cuenta sobre sus ambiciones y desventuras. Va a Arles en 1888 y tiene un encuentro con Vincent Van Gogh. Más tarde viaja a Paris de 1799, sostiene una entrevista con el general Bonaparte y se ve involucrado con un personaje subversivo, Gastón, lo que le vale ser arrestado. Tiene frecuentes desencuentros con su asfixiante pareja, Veranda, quien no le cree lo de los viajes al pasado y le reprocha la poca atención que le dedica. Viaja a la ciudad maya de Chichén Itzá, en el año 1000. Se ve involucrado sexualmente con una joven maya, para descubrir luego que el hermano intenta convertirlo en el esposo. Emprende una nueva travesía al país de Nubia, en el año 24 antes de Cristo. Es testigo del encuentro entre el gobernador de Egipto, Petronio y la reina de Nubia, Aminarenas, enemigos y a la vez amantes. Ahí es atraído por una bailarina, Imneria. De regreso, haciéndose insostenible su relación con Veranda, deciden terminar. Emprende su último viaje al pasado, a Madrid del año 1935 a buscar a Carlota, una joven cuya foto aparece ilustrando un antiguo calendario. Logra encontrar a Carlota, pero se ve obligado a regresar y enfrentar la realidad.
