Hace doscientos años, la esclavitud tenía al sur de Estados Unidos firmemente atrapado. Alrededor de cuatro millones de afroamericanos languidecían en las condiciones de vida más espantosas, con sus vidas controladas por personas que los consideraban objetos. Se les mataba de hambre, se les azotaba y a las mujeres se les ponía a trabajar a pesar de estar embarazadas, enfermas o ser tan jóvenes que apenas podían caminar. Eran despreciadas, oprimidas y degradadas en todos los sentidos. Anhelaban la libertad, pero para llegar a la tierra libre de Canadá debían cruzar miles de kilómetros bajo la amenaza de los cazadores de esclavos, hombres que se habían propuesto atrapar a personas desesperadas que estaban al borde de la libertad.
Era una época sin esperanza, pero también era una época de héroes. La única esperanza que tenían estos esclavos de escapar de su brutal destino era el ferrocarril subterráneo. Esta legendaria red de personas y lugares llevó a decenas de miles de esclavos fugados por todo el norte de Estados Unidos y hasta Canadá. Y aunque muchas de las personas que hicieron posible estas fugas se han fundido en la historia como héroes sin rostro, conocemos los nombres y las historias de muchos.
