Die Studie untersucht die von Hartmanns Gregorius abhängigen Texte die Gesta Gregorii Peccatoris Arnolds von Lübeck, die Hexameterversion Gregorius Peccator, die Der-Heiligen-Leben-Legende Gregorius auf dem Stein, das lateinische Exempel De Gregorio und das niederdeutsche Exempel Gregorius de grote sunder. Dabei werden sprachliche und motivische Gemeinsamkeiten aufgezeigt, Bearbeitungsverfahren herausgestellt und der Wandel der Rezipientenkreise und Gebrauchssituationen mit inhaltlichen und kodikologischen Befunden begründet. Der Einfluss der Mitüberlieferung auf die Veränderung der Textgestalt in der weiteren Überlieferung gehört mit zu den zentralen Untersuchungsaspekten. Mit Ausnahme der Gesta Arnolds von Lübeck werden die Rezeptionen durch Neueditionen der Hartmann jeweils am nächsten stehenden Textformen zugänglich gemacht. Somit entsteht ein Bild von den Gebrauchskontexten, in denen die Gregorius-Rezeption im Mittelalter wirksam geworden ist.
