Es soll die Frage beantwortet werden, ob und in welcher Art und Weise eine Verbindung von (digitalem) Spiel und Lernen sinnvoll ist, welche Gefahren sie birgt und welcher Nutzen aus ihr gezogen werden kann. Die Arbeit ist dabei als Einstieg mit möglichst vielseitiger Betrachtung der Thematik zu sehen. Es wird ein Überblick über die verschiedenen Facetten des Spiels und seiner Untersuchung vorgestellt, der zunächst ein klares und allgemein verständliches Bild der Aktivität des Spielens zeichnen soll und außerdem Möglichkeiten zur weiteren und spezifischeren Beschäftigung mit Teilen der vorgestellten Untersuchungen anbieten wird. Bei der Erarbeitung des Themas wird nur vereinzelt auf Primärquellen und in großen Teilen auf Sekundärliteratur zurückgegriffen, da das Ziel vor allem eine Darstellung der Forschungsstände und eine Übersicht über das jeweilige Thema ist. Inhaltlich ist die Arbeit in zwei Komplexe unterteilt, die sich vor allem durch die Art der Betrachtung des Spiels voneinander abgrenzen.
