Der Band beschreibt das Leben und Wirken der Mainzer Erzbischöfe zwischen 1089 und 1200. Die Reihe beginnt mit Ruthard (1089-1109), gefolgt von Adalbert I. von Saarbrücken (1110-1137), dessen Neffen Adalbert II. von Saarbrücken (1138-1141), Marcolf (1141-1142), Heinrich (1142-1153), Arnold von Selenhofen (1153-1160), Konrad von Wittelsbach (1161-1165, 1183-1200) und Christian von Buch (1165-1183). Auch die Elekten Burchard von Jechaburg (1158) und Rudolf von Zähringen (1160-1161) werden vorgestellt. Bei den Bischofserhebungen spielten diverse Interessen eine wichtige Rolle. Angesichts der Position des Erzbischofs als erster Reichsfürst war dem Kaiser daran gelegen, einen Parteigänger in diesem Amt zu sehen, doch auch die Interessen des lokalen Adels mussten Berücksichtigung finden. In dieser Zeit spielte die Durchsetzung des von Gregor VII. (1073-1085) formulierten päpstlichen Primates eine große Rolle in der erzbischöflichen Politik. Ein wesentliches Ziel war dabei ein gutes Einvernehmen mit König bzw. Kaiser und Papst, wenigstens aber mit einem von beiden. Der Mainzer Erzbischof musste es unter allen Umständen vermeiden, mit beiden gleichzeitig in Konflikt zu geraten. Daraus ergaben sich im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder Kurswechsel in der erzbischöflichen Politik (Ruthard 1098/99, Adalbert I. 1112, Adalbert　II. 1141). Als sich Erzbischof Heinrich Papst und König zugleich zu Gegnern machte, verlor er 1153 sein Amt. Ebenso wurde Konrad von Wittelsbach, zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch Elekt, 1165 vom Kaiser abgesetzt, nachdem er sich auf die Seite Papst Alexanders　III. gestellt hatte und gegen den vom Herrscher favorisierten Paschalis III. Im Umfeld Alexanders übernahm Konrad aber wichtige Ämter und wurde schließlich 1183 wieder als Erzbischof von Mainz eingesetzt. Der Ausbau der territorialen Macht im vom Rhein bis zur Saale reichenden Erzbistum Mainz spielte in der bischöflichen Politik des betrachteten Zeitraums eine große Rolle und hatte Einfluss auf reichspolitische Entscheidungen, wie beispielsweise Adalberts　I. Agieren bei der Königswahl 1125 erkennen lässt.
