Charles Darwin, geb. 1809 in Shrewsbury, England geboren, studierte u.a. Medizin und Theologie; sein sein eigentliches Interesse aber galt der Geologie und Biologie. Im Jahre 1831 ging er von Plymouth aus auf eine Weltreise, die die Weichen für sein ganzes weiteres Leben und Schaffen stellte. Charles Darwin starb 1882. Seine Werke gelten auch bis heute noch als Meilensteine der Soziologie und der Kulturwissenschaften. Das vorliegende Buch enthält Darwins Thesen zu der Entstehung des Menschen: Er ging davon aus, dass alle Facetten des menschlichen Verhaltens, vor allem aber die moralischen und intellektuellen Fähigkeiten, nicht angeboren sind, sondern sich erst über einen längeren Zeitraum entwickeln. Er geht darüber hinaus von einem Mehrstufensytem aus und dass jede Zivilisation jede dieser Stufe im Laufe ihrer Entwicklung durchläuft.
