बंकिमचन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय का जन्म सन् 1838 को एक खुशहाल बंगाली परिवार में हुआ था। वे बांग्ला भाषा के प्रख्यात उपन्यासकार एवं कवि थे। बंकिमचन्द्र ने भारतीय मानवीय भावों को सहज शब्दों में दर्शाया है। धर्म, समाज, जाति एवं राजनीति के मुद्दों पर विस्तृत रूप से प्रकाश डाला है, भारतीय मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार इनकी रचनाओं में अपनी छवि को देखता है। भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के क्रांतिकारियों के लिए ये प्रेरणास्रोत थे। बंकिमचन्द्र ने 'देवी चौधरानी' उपन्यास में भारतीय स्त्रियों की दुर्दशा को जीवंत रूप दिया है। प्रफुल्ल एक गरीब लड़की है, जिसका विवाह सुखीसम्पन्न परिवार में होता है। परंतु गरीबी के कारण उसे घर से निकाल दिया जाता है। इसके बाद वो पूरी कहानी में संघर्ष करती नजर आती है। इस कहानी में स्त्री के मजबूत इरादों को सुंदर तरीके से उकेरा गया है।
