Ein beträchtlicher Teil der Exil- und Emigrationsliteratur des 20. Jahrhunderts stammt von jüdischen Autorinnen und Autoren. Gleichwohl scheint das jüdische Moment hinter den allen Exilanten gemeinsamen Erfahrungen (Akkulturationsprobleme, antfaschistisches Engagement) zurückzutreten oder für das literarische Werk sich zumindest nicht prägend auszuwirken. In der Exilliteraturforschung wurde jedenfalls diese Frage bisher kaum diskutiert. Eine erste Annäherung bieten die Aufsätze dieses Sammelbandes, die auf ein im Mai 1989 veranstaltetes Symposium der Abteilung für deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem zurückgehen.
