The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (Der Ausdruck von Emotionen bei Mensch und Tier) ist Charles Darwins drittes großes Werk zur Evolutionstheorie, nach On the Origin of Species (1859) und The Descent of Man (1871). Ursprünglich als Kapitel in Die Abstammung des Menschen gedacht, wurde The Expression immer umfangreicher und wurde 1872 separat veröffentlicht. In diesem Buch geht es um die biologischen Aspekte des Gefühlslebens und Darwin untersucht die tierischen Ursprünge solcher menschlicher Eigenschaften wie das Heben der Augenbrauen in Momenten der Überraschung und das Hochziehen der Oberlippe in einem aggressiven Grinsen. The Expression wurde auch als Darwins "vergessenes Meisterwerk" bezeichnet.
