Diese Studie, hervorgegangen aus der Habilitationsschrift des Autors, entwickelt die erste sowohl einheitliche als auch formal explizite Theorie der freien Dative des Deutschen. Traditionelle Dativtypen, die abgedeckt werden, umfassen den possessiven Dativ, den dativus (in)commodi sowie den dativus iudicantis. Die zentrale Hypothese des Buches lautet: Jeder freie Dativ bindet den Possessor eines Koarguments desselben finiten Teilsatzes. Damit ist der freie Dativ der Exponent einer Reflexivierungsdiathese, die viel mit kanonischer Reflexivität gemeinsam hat. Allerdings ist im Fall der freien Dativdiathese das Dativargument das Antezedens (und nicht das Subjekt), und das gebundene Pronomen ist immer ein Possessor im weiteren Sinne. Die besondere syntaktische Konfiguration, die mit diesem Bindungsverhältnis einhergeht - die Rösslsprungbindung - wird erstmalig als privilegiert erkannt und syntaktisch hergeleitet.
