DDR 1989. In der sächsischen Kleinstadt Werdau werden die beiden Kriminalpolizisten Baumann und Bauer auf den Hauptbahnhof gerufen. Sie finden eine junge Frau vor, die von einer durchfahrenden Lokomotive erfasst wurde. Der Anblick ist schrecklich. Noch schlimmer ist aber, dass die tote Frau Mutter von zwei kleinen Kindern ist. Baumann und Bauer ermitteln in alle Richtungen. Ohne Erfolg. Als dann auch noch das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit Druck auf die Kriminalpolizisten ausübt, scheint der Fall gänzlich verloren. Erst, als Baumann 27 Jahre später, auf das Angebot eines Computers aufmerksam wird, keimt wieder Hoffnung auf. Der ehemalige Volkspolizist Baumann macht seinen Partner ausfindig. Gemeinsam wollen sie trickreich wie eh und je diesen "Cold Case" wieder aufnehmen.
