Diese Ele mente haben in ihren Verbindungen bekanntlich ganzlich andere Eigen schaften als in freiem Zustand. So ist beispielsweise reines Eisen ein weiches silberglanzend. ,es Metall, welches. an derLuft sehr schnell unter Aufnahme des Elementes "Sauerstoff" in das rote Eisenoxyd iiberg'eht. Es verliert dabei als Rost v6llig seine Festigkeit, wahrend der aufge nommene, urspriinglich gasfarmige Sauerstoff "fest" wird. Durch Zu fUgung ganz geringer Mengen von anderen Elementen, beispielsweise Kohlenstoff oder Kupfer u. a. , kann man die Eigenschaften des reinen Metalls in ganz verschiedener Weise verandem; mankann das Eisen harten, man kann es in GuBeisen verwandeln und ihm sogar seine Eigenschaft, schnell unter Sauerstoffaufnahme zu oxydieren, nehmen, man kann es rostfrei machen. Noch typischer ist das Beispiel fUr den iiberaus vielseitigen Kohlen stoff, der ja in der Hauptsache die meisten unserer Nahrungsmittel und unseren Karper zusammensetzt. Reiner Kohlenstoff kommt zu nachst in drei verschiedenen Formzustanden vor: amorph, also ge staltlos als Kohle, kleinkristallin als Graphit, der zur Herstellung unserer Bleistifte dient, und grobkristallin in einem anderen Kristall system kristallisiert als Diamant. Seine Eigenschaften in dieser reinen Form sind bekannt. Kohlenstoff ist vierwertig, d. h. er vermag vier weitere, einwertige Atome festzuhalten. Verbindet er sich mit vier Wasserstoff-Atomen, bildet er das Grubengas oder Methan (CH4) , das in Kohlenbergwerken bei Entziindung die "schlagenden Wetter" hervorruft und zum Antrieb unserer Automobile dient.
