Đạo Phật từ khi đức Phật tổ lập giáo đến nay, đã hơn hai ngàn năm trăm năm, vốn vẫn là một đạo duy nhất. Song hoàn cảnh xã hội và con người ở khắp trên hoàn cầu là khác nhau. Vì trên đường đời, nhân loại tiến hóa không giống nhau. Kẻ thông minh sáng suốt, người mê muội tối tăm; kẻ thong dong nhàn nhã, người vướng bận nhọc nhằn; kẻ đã từng học lý xem kinh, người vừa mới nghe văn tầm sách; có kẻ mới học mà thông, lại có người học suốt đời vẫn dốt…
Bởi thế cho nên các bậc hiền thánh đều tùy phương tiện mà độ thế, cứu người. Chính đức Phật tổ từ thuở xưa cũng đã làm như vậy. Tùy thuận nơi những người đến nghe trong pháp hội, ngài thuyết dạy giáo pháp phù hợp. Hoặc giảng rộng lý lẽ, hoặc dẫn chuyện tích xưa, hoặc bày ra giới luật. Có khi nói xa, có lúc nói gần, có khi chỉ thẳng, có lúc dùng ẩn dụ... Ngài dùng đủ cách như thế, cốt yếu cũng chỉ là muốn giúp cho chúng sanh đạt hiểu chân lý. Với hàng đệ tử xuất thân quí tộc nhưng dốc lòng tinh tấn, ngài dạy theo một cách. Với bậc vua quan còn tham đắm lợi danh, ngài lại dạy theo một cách khác. Với hàng thương gia rộng lòng bố thí, ngài dạy theo một cách. Với kẻ trung tín thành tâm, ngài lại dạy theo một cách khác hơn nữa. Cách sử dụng ngôn ngữ của ngài biến hóa rất tuyệt diệu, phi thường. Trong kinh vẫn thường nói có đến tám vạn bốn ngàn pháp môn, cũng không ngoài ý này.
Sau khi đức Phật nhập Niết-bàn, các vị đại đệ tử mới ghi chép lại những lời thuyết dạy của ngài thành ba tạng kinh điển. Đó là tạng Kinh, tạng Luật và tạng Luận. Trong đó có đủ các mức độ thuyết dạy cao thấp, nhanh chậm khác nhau. Nói khái quát trong ba tạng ấy, mỗi tạng đều có phần chủ đích riêng biệt, mà dung hợp với nhau cùng nhắm đến việc giúp người tu hành mau đạt đến chỗ giải thoát khổ não. Tạng Kinh giúp người hiểu rõ những lý lẽ, quy luật trong cuộc sống, mà quan trọng, nền tảng hơn hết là lý nhân quả, nhân duyên; từ những câu kinh rất đơn sơ giản lược, cho đến những bộ kinh đồ sộ rất cao siêu, thâm áo cũng đều có đủ. Tạng Luật giúp người kiềm chế tự thân, xa điều ác, gần điều thiện, cho đến được trong sạch cả thể xác lẫn tinh thần. Tạng Luận giải rõ những chỗ nghi ngờ ngăn trở trên đường tu tập, giúp người ta vững đức tin mà vượt qua khó khăn không nghi ngại. Dẫu là người tu ở trình độ nào, tu theo pháp môn gì, cũng không thể thiếu đi một trong ba yếu tố ấy.
