Carmichael’s Journey’ follows the migration of Carmichael the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo who, along with his parents, takes the long journey to the species’ coastal feeding grounds. There used to be many more flocks of Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos and food used to be much more plentiful, so now Carmichael and his family have to travel further to find food. Carmichael and his family stay on the coast for the warmer months until early winter, when it’s time for his family to return to their nesting site. Carmichael’s mother will lay another egg and Carmichael is looking forward to having a brother or sister. When they return they find that their nesting tree has been destroyed by forest clearing. Unable to find another tree to nest in, Carmichael and his family have to continue flying in search of a new home. Suddenly, they come across a truck and Carmichael’s father is killed. The book also teaches children about conservation, encouraging them to explore nature and plant a tree for local animals.
