रज़ा के लिए गाँधी सम्भवत: सबसे प्रेरणादायी विभूति थे। ८ वर्ष की कच्ची उम्र में मण्डला में गाँधी जी को पहली बार देखने का उन पर इतना गहरा प्रभाव पड़ा था कि १९४८ में अपने भाइयों-बहनों और पहली पत्नी के साथ पाकिस्तान नहीं गये थे और अपने वतन-भारत में -ही बने रहे। उन्होंने अपने जीवन का लगभग दो तिहाई हिस्सा फ्रांस में बिताया पर अपनी भारतीय नागरिकता कभी नहीं छोड़ी, न ही फ्रेंच नागरिकता स्वीकार की। अपनी कला के अन्तिम चरण में उन्होंने गाँधी से प्रेरित चित्रों की एक शृंखला भी बनायी। रज़ा पुस्तक माला के अन्तर्गत हम गाँधी से सम्बन्धित महत्त्वपूर्ण सामग्री प्रस्तुत करने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध हैं। गाँधी के १५० वें वर्ष में हमारी कोशिश यह भी है कि इस पुस्तक माला में गाँधी पर और उनकी विचार-दृष्टि से प्रेरित नयी सामग्री भी प्रकाशित हो। इसी सिलसिले में विचारक बनवारी द्वारा लिखित यह पुस्तक प्रकाशित हो रही है। गाँधी किसी रूढि़ से बँधे नहीं थे और उन पर विचार भी, उनकी अवधारणाओं और उनके आलोक में इतिहास तथा संस्कृति पर विचार भी किसी एक लीक पर नहीं चल सकता। अपने कठिन और उलझाऊ समय में हम आश्वस्त हैं कि यह पुस्तक गाँधी-विचार को नये ढंग से उद्बुद्ध करेगी। रज़ा की इच्छा थी कि गाँधी, विचार के निरन्तर विपन्न होते जा रहे परिसर में, एक महत्त्वपूर्ण और उत्तेजक उपस्थिति बने रहें। -अशोक वाजपेयी.
