The Congress of African People (CAP) was formed in 1970 in Atlanta and continued throughout the 1970s. Beginning in 1976, it functioned under another name, the Revolutionary Communist League (Marxist-Leninist-Mao Tse Tung Thought), until it merged in 1980 with the League of Revolutionary Struggle, a Marxist-Leninist organization made up mainly of Asian American and Latino American activists. For several years after the merger and the ultimate demise of CAP, the ideas and work of former CAP members continued to impact and influence the Black Liberation Movement. This first-hand narrative of the author's tenure in and observation of the Congress of African People is a part of a broader movement to document and analyze the Black Power stage of the African American Liberation Movement from the 1950s through the 1970s.
