In queste pagine, si rianimano figure altrimenti dimenticate nei numerosi diari di guerra e corrispondenze private, conservati dai familiari dei reduci. Nei versi riecheggiano Stalingrado e Nikolajevka, la battaglia di Berlino del '45, le vicende dei deportati e degli scampati ai lager, le voci dei testimoni dei tanti episodi di guerra locali, estrema trincea della miseria umana, come l'eccidio di resistenza nei pressi del forte Tortagna, sull'Appennino ligure.
