Like those of Byron, Keats, and Shelley, youth predominates throughout Akhtar's poetry. Shaair-e-Roomaan i.e. "The Poet of Romance" was his alias. Among his best-known poetry volumes are Akhtaristan, Nigarshat-e-Akhtar, Lala-e-toor, Tayyur-e-Aawara, Naghma-e-Haram, Subh-e bahaar, and Shahnaz. He was renowned for establishing literary trends in Urdu, particularly in poetry. Selected short stories by Akhtar Shairani are included in this book "Alif Laila ki aik Raat".
