The seemingly sudden emergence of new black beauty standards in the 1960s in fact had deep roots in the black community. Tracing those roots to an 1891 contest to find the most beautiful woman of the race, this book documents how black women have negotiated the intersection of race, class, politics, and beauty in their lives.
