Die überwältigende Mehrheit der europäischen Bürger war nicht live dabei, hat den Vertragstext nicht gelesen und wird das allenfalls partiell nachholen. Kaum jemand weiß daher genau, welche Regelungen in dem Vertragswerk enthalten sind, die sich beeinflussend auf das Leben der Europäer auswirken werden. Das Wissen darüber wird aus den Massenmedien gespeist und daher ist es von besonderem Interesse, was und wie in diesen kommuniziert wird. Dies und die Rückwirkung massenmedialer Kommunikation auf die Gesellschaft wird mit Hilfe sozialkonstruktivistischer und diskursanalytischer Methoden am Beispiel des Vertrags von Lissabon aufgedeckt.
