January, 1944. The British secret services are under enormous pressure but desperately short of agents. To swell the ranks of their depleted and yet most essential weapon in the wartime armoury, MI5 are compelled to call upon their bottom tier. These are the guileful reprobates who, since the beginning of the conflict, fell foul of the law and can now be cajoled, by threat of ruination, imprisonment or worse, into "special Government employment".
By the signed confession he was made to autograph to escape the gallows on his last mission, George Twyford is forced back into play against seriously dangerous and powerful enemies of Great Britain. An expendable asset perhaps, but with him comes a clique of close pals that, between them, bring a wealth of nefarious talent to the assignments Twyford must undertake.
Notwithstanding how perilous life may become, it goes without saying that George will always apply his artful wiles to any contingency where he might incidentally discover profitable rewards.
Saying that, remuneration aside, to withstand the constant plots intent on weakening our defences, these Islands of ours will need all the masterful skulduggery that George Twyford & co. can conjure up!
