本书是首部以共产党干部的视野来全方面的真实描写中国当代历史的纪实小说，带领读者经历当年各种指示及运动执行过程，各种人物从命令执行过程到结果的不同表现，形象而具体的描写了中国几十年来（从延安时期到改革开放）的社会变迁，为当年事件亲历者唤起当年回忆，也为不了解当年历史的新一代提供鲜活的历史人物轨迹。作者力图站着中间立场，客观记述中共功过。书中所有人物，上至谢富治、李井泉、赵紫阳等大人物，下至中共基层干部和普通老百姓，没有圣人，没有十恶不赦，也没有简单的是非好坏判断。作者希望通过这些人物在历史大潮中的升降起伏，悲欢离合来表现巨变洪流中千变万化的个人命运。本书情节大开大合，一波三折，既有宏伟的战争场面又有冷酷的政治权斗，既有细腻的感情纠葛又有壮丽的山川河流，情景交融，文史并茂。
第一部内容为抗战时期，第二部为国共内战，第三部从共产党建国到三反五反（第一、二、三部已完稿），以后将要面世的第四部第五部将直面更敏感的反右、大跃进、大饥荒、七千人大会，文化大革命等重大历史事件，敬请期待。
