以中国留美学生为主体的业余团体"华人在美医药界联谊会"滨海分会发生了内讧。担任会计的何渤海不愿选边站队，更不愿在药联内部激化矛盾导致分裂，从而在不知情的情况下得罪了自己在工作公司内的顶头上司韩卫东。韩卫东曾经出任过药联滨海分会会长，是这次内讧发难一方的关键人物。他对何渤海没有坚定地站在自己一边十分恼火，执意要进行报复。
职业道路一帆风顺的韩卫东来自中国江南水乡，毕业于哥伦比亚大学获得博士学位，是一家制药公司"AB制药"药物化学部的一个团队领导人，深受同出一门的大师兄汤普森偏爱。韩卫东编织罪名罗列了十九条何渤海工作不称职的指控，企图把何渤海踢出公司。但他请分管药物化学的副总裁汤普森签署针对何渤海的"绩效改进计划（PIP）"时，遭到汤普森拒绝。
不久，汤普森离开了公司。在争夺因汤普森离去而空缺的药物化学部领导权的明争暗斗中，布鲁斯·爱德华兹在一款特制蛋糕的帮助下，击败了才华横溢但人缘不好的丹尼尔·麦当劳。新上任的副总裁爱德华兹为了得到韩卫东的支持，签署了"PIP"。
