"本书收录了作者关于美术理论研究和美术批评方面的一些文章，尤其是关于民间美术与工艺美术的基础理论研究的文章，对中国美术发展战略、中国美术观、民族复兴视角中的新中国美术等等，提出了自己的见解和主张。本书是中国当代艺术思想与实践批评领域的重要成果。
收入这本文集里的稿子，是笔者针对当代艺术思想与实践所发表的批评文章。按写作时间算，跨度已近三十年。
回顾这一时期，改革开放的现代化成为中国的主题，我们的社会经历了各种挑战、矛盾和嬗变。穿越这一历史时空的中国当代艺术，以多元的价值追求和空前的形态变化呼应着复杂多变的社会现实，并随着国家建设转向以经济发展为中心而密切了与市场的关系。三十年来的艺术理念和创作实践，带着一种反叛的基调，呈现出重视个人、解构权威、追逐形式、崇尚娱乐的总体特征。艺术领域的这种转变，对于补偿特定历史所造成的人文生态的失衡，不无积极意义和合理性。然而，"多元化"现实所助长的"去中心"、"去文化"和"去中国"的倾向，也在不断消解社会生活所依赖的价值共识、文化传统和公共话语，这削弱了人文生态构成中的主导性、延续性和统一性。"空心化"由此成为当代艺术的普遍问题。
回味起来，这是一个亟需批评却又难以展开真正批评的三十年。
现实中，原有的艺术评价体系日渐式微，而新时代的理论建设却还没有搭建起完整的框架。真可谓旧已破，新未立，顾盼两茫茫。就美术领域而言，由于对现代美术革命的理念及历史缺乏深刻的反思，由于对文化立场、价值取向、公共价值、价值结构、价值表述等把握美术的基本问题缺乏系统的研究，在面对"空心化"的状况以及重新整合社会的要求时，我们的批评实践显然缺乏必要的基础理论以及自洽的运作体系。
这种情形日甚一日，着实让人纠结。笔者当年写作《新生代艺术--漫游的存在》时便感受到这种欲为而又难为的尴尬，以至觉得只能将自己的评论称作"批评式阅读"--一种介于"批评"和"阅读"之间的东西。
如今，笔者的想法依然未变，这些收入文集的文章，就只当是写在"中国当代艺术思想与实践"这一鸿篇巨制的边缘空处的"按语"吧。
所辑文章分三个版块。第一版块所涉对象比较整体，视角也比较宏观，属于如今不太讨好的所谓"宏大叙事"；第二版块所涉对象和视角比较具体，多是针对某一专业现象或问题的梳理讨论；第三版块则是个案研究，所涉对象都是笔者近距离接触过的学者和艺术家。
