故事情節主要從王綏宗自家和女兒嫁出去的家庭演繹。他的四男二女都是較底層的人物，男的有農民，有公務員，有當兵的，還有接班頂替到學校工作的，小女兒考上了大學，大女兒卻嫁給了王綏宗的初戀情人當兒媳婦，是個普通木匠家庭，極為一般。生育矛盾主要放在大女兒這一家。這一家歷來人丁都很弱，幾代男丁單傳，其女兒的肚子又不爭氣，生了好幾個女的卻生不出男孩來，這樣女兒王桂英要生男孩就出現了許許多多的問題，而要解決這些問題，就只有由王綏宗這一家來出謀獻策，並給予了大力支持幫助。這樣就產生了許許多多有趣的故事。
