深切热爱中国的傅高义教授，生前在哈佛大学校园他的住所，和我长 谈过一个堪称盛世危言的观点。事过十年，我用地道的中文而非拗口的译文表达如下：
"输在起跑线上",一直说，2000多年前的孔子哲学不会产生科技，起跑 线得推到这时候，而不是初小高小、洋务运动、民国初年、一五二五、改革开放、万众海归。现在看，则可初步怀疑，中国人可能是输在分岔道上，没有触碰到正赛道起跑线！科学，包括社会科学，是在可以证是继而可以证否长河之中不断跳跃发展的。科技后知后觉的中国人，理论上可以在证否阶段发展出来从零到一科技基础理论，避免永远亦步亦趋模仿亦即全盘沿用西方科技基础理论。但是二百年来事实不幸说明，这方面，中国迄今还是不行：国内整个儿不行，虽然海外五六人能行，但属样本太少。诺贝尔奖得奖项目也不一定是从零到一。
希望这话可起棒喝中国后学精英、后继领袖的作用。多么期待他们能 够迸发天赋才能！有人不以为然，那是他们混淆了从零到一和从一到九。国 人大多不懂二事巨大区别，凭空顾盼自豪。西方从零到一目前已抵井喷时 代，中国则愈发趋向于零。民主国家的Power及其前身Capabilities势必愈 发碾压专制国家，可以预测后者愈发失去胜算。如果政制改良成功，中国仍 然没有足量从零到一，那就得考虑中美合邦、华洋融血。这样华夏文明还可 作为伟大华洋合一文明的亚种文明⸺包括它的美到极致唐诗宋词⸺继 续存在，恒久存在。悠悠万事惟此为大。
