这本书的文章是封控三年期间所写，但它们的写作并非随性而至，而是基于明确的问题意识。汪晖、项飙和张旭东都可以归为所谓的"新左派"，新左派在两个层面上构成了自由主义在理论上的对手，一是他们的理论可用于为国家主义背书（尽管他们自己不一定是明目张胆的国家主义者），二是他们的理论的对于有志于学术和变革的年轻人有着巨大的吸引力，因而与自由主义有着直接的竞争关系。对于年轻人的另一种关注构成了本书的第二类文章，那就是"小粉红"或"民粹主义"的研究。海内外学术界目前对"小粉红"的研究还在初步阶段，大多都将其等同于"极端民族主义者"，然而这只是其中一个面向，作者认为，将小粉红定义为"民粹主义者"，或许更为贴切。与以往对中国"民粹主义"的研究不同，作者并没有把重点放在民粹的"反精英"倾向，而是与"仇外"（xenophobia）联系起来，并且深入挖掘了国家权力和国内外环境对于民粹的塑造作用。所谓的"少数派"，是指那些与国家主义趋势背道而驰者，这当然也包括作者本人，第三组文章记录了作者及其他"少数派"如何反思国家主义，以及抵御国家主义的侵蚀，事件跨度可至"新时代"之前。
