Divided Europe

An examination of the social and territorial divisions within Europe that uses a global perspective to argue that social and territorial divisions are inextricably linked, and that only a detailed examination of economic, political and geographical differences can lead to a clearer understanding of the social tensions and inequalities that exist within Europe. The contributors show how contested social models of welfare respond to both global pressures and the attempts to harmonize European social provision. The essays provide a detailed examination of economic, political and geographical differences, and explore the social dimensions of disadvantage and inequality. Topics covered include: gendered and regional changes in employment; social integration and citizenship issues arising from migration and racial differences; welfare state responses to the needs of growing numbers of older people; and the existence of social exclusion in Europe's complex and changing boundary regions.
