In seinem Buch setzt sich Franz Wilhelm Nauen kritisch mit Hamiltons Position zur Erkenntnistheorie auseinander und diskutiert insbesondere Hamiltons Ansatz des "philosophischen Common-sense", der davon ausgeht, dass bestimmte Erkenntnisse wie z.B. die Existenz einer Außenwelt oder anderer Menschen nicht durch Argumente bewiesen werden können, sondern in gewisser Weise selbstverständlich sind.
