Leider sind Unterernährung, Hunger und ein Leben unterhalb des absoluten Existenzminimums für über eine Milliarde Menschen, vor allem in den afrikanischen Ländern südlich der Sahara, immer noch Realität. Wie sollten also Projekte zur Armutsbekämpfung und ländlicher Entwicklung gestaltet sein, um diesem Ziel gerecht zu werden? Was sind die Ursachen der Armut und wie kann man zu einer nachhaltigen Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen der Armen beitragen? Für die Beantwortung solcher Fragen liefert die Forschung im Bereich der Ökonomie der Armut brauchbare Ansätze. In dieser Studie werden methodische Konzepte zur Datenerhebung und zur Analyse der Armut und Vulnerabilität entwickelt, die für die Armutsforschung und die Gestaltung einer effizienteren und effektiveren Entwicklungszusammenarbeit in Afrika besondere Relevanz haben.
