Elmshorn besaß über 260 Jahre eine jüdische Gemeinde. Diese hatte sich über eine lange Zeit der Isolierung soweit assimiliert, dass sie einen wichtigen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Stadt hatte. Die Juden besaßen Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts einen Anteil von acht Prozent der Bevölkerung. Nach der Emanzipation von 1869 verminderte sich die Anzahl der Gemeindemitglieder so stark, dass sie zu Beginn der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus nur noch 0,5 Prozent der Bevölkerung stellten. In nicht einmal 10 Jahren vernichteten dann die Nationalsozialisten eine 260-jährige Symbiose, die oftmals sehr segensreich für die Stadt war. Erst 2003, also 60 Jahre nach der Vernichtung jüdischen Lebens in Elmshorn, gründete sich hier eine neue Gemeinde. Der erste Band umfasst die Zeit der Isolierung über die Assimilation bis zur Emanzipation und den ersten Weltkrieg. Der zweite Band enthält die Zeit von dem Antisemitismus über die Diskriminierung und Verfolgung mit dem Terror bis hin zur Vernichtung der Jüdischen Gemeinde von Elmshorn.
